History
Although the idea of a parish-based youth musical group existed in 2001, the Youth Orchestra concept was never put into motion until the summer of 2003 when Gabriel Chan and Sebastian Tong were asked to rally up a group of young musicians for the SBYG Café Night. Under time constraints and lack of resources, the first performance was not optimum but it proved that a youth musical group could exist as an interest group.
From this initial band of seven youths, the Youth Orchestra of St. Cecilia was founded, bearing the name of the patron saint of music. SCYO was joined under the SBYG to benefit from an established and stable base of operations.
Soon, the Savior of the World Chinese Catholic Church invited the newly formed SCYO to perform at the Annual Christmas Gala. In response to the new challenge, SCYO prolifically recruited new members and developed a basic central committee. After many obstacles and unexpected developments, SCYO was ready to stage their first major performance. 9 performed with SCYO at the Children's Christmas Party; 13 performed at the SOTW Christmas Gala.
In the years following, St. Cecilia's Youth Orchestra has grown steadily due to increasing exposure and interest from within the church.
The 2006 to 2007 calendar year also brought with it more successes: SCYO was able to recast itself as an independent Youth Group, fully managing organization and logistics on its own. Musically, the formation of a permanent Brass Quintet and Flute Quartet were welcomed with open arms. As a result, in 2007, SCYO was able to host their own end-of-season concert, proving that the orchestra had matured to a stable and presentable organization.
Together with the entire Youth Orchestra, these three ensembles charge onward towards the future and whatever treasures it may bring.
Every September and June, St. Cecilia's Youth Orchestra recruits talented individuals from the church and community to expand the Orchestra. These active members come together weekly to rehearse for performances year-round.
